Kitabghar
A library program creating a safe, brave, and non-judgmental learning space for children in challenging circumstances.
Kitabghar is BELIEF’s library program for children who have had limited access to books and shared reading experiences. Through regular sessions and thoughtful facilitation, the program helps children discover reading as something joyful, personal, and meaningful.
What we do
A trained facilitator leads children through read-aloud sessions, book talks, book displays, character-based activities, and library games. These sessions are designed to make books engaging and help children respond to stories in their own way.
Why it matters
Many children in Kitabghar had very little exposure to books when the program began. For some younger children, even sitting for a story or looking at pictures in a book was a completely new experience.
With consistent sessions, children have become more comfortable and confident. They now listen more attentively, explore books with curiosity, and connect stories with their own experiences.
What changes we see
Over time, children have begun to enjoy reading, care for books more thoughtfully, and take part in book-based activities with greater ease. Some older children also help in sessions and have been inspired to write poems and letters.
Where we work
Kitabghar has been running in Nashik for the past two years and has also begun in observation homes in Pune from 2026.
Kitabghar is helping children build a reading culture, a sense of belonging, and a more confident relationship with books.
